"City Rehearsal - Yu Zhengda Solo Exhibition" presents works created by the young Taiwanese artist during his residencies in various cities from 2008 to 2013. Starting from Taipei, his journey took him to Aomori, Japan; Auckland and Wellington, New Zealand; and finally to Macao for this exhibition. Through humorous and witty linguistic interventions, his works reveal the potential for subversion and engagement when an outsider encounters a foreign culture.
Yu Zhengda has long been fascinated by the imprecise gaps and disjunctions that language creates across cultural differences. These fractures bring to light issues of identity, power, reconstruction, and translation. Through his signature method of rehearsed bodily performances and linguistic repetition, his works present seemingly choreographed scenarios unfolding within real life.
