About the Competition
The 1st Macao Contemporary Illustrations Competition invites artists to explore the theme 'City Memory: Floating World of the Lotus Island'. Since the mid-16th century, Macao has been a unique hub in world trade and cultural exchange. The Macao peninsula, shaped like a lotus, is connected to the mainland by a slender sandbar resembling a 'lotus stem'. Today, with expanding land reclamation, this once tranquil coastal town has transformed into a bustling 'World Centre of Tourism and Leisure', an artificial floating island.
This competition aims to collect original contemporary illustrations to uncover the modern stories of Macao, preserving the city's narrative through art. It seeks to build a cultural exchange platform for youth, promote Macao's art and design, discover talented young illustrators, and support the long-term development of Macao's cultural and creative industries.
Competition Details
- Theme: City Memory: Floating World of the Lotus Island
- Submission Period: September 10 – November 10, 2014 (until 24:00)
- Eligibility:
- Students enrolled in Macao tertiary institutions
- Holders of Macao SAR Permanent or Non-Permanent Resident Identity Cards
Submission Guidelines
- Entry Fee: MOP 40 per piece / MOP 80 per series (max 6 pieces per series). Unlimited submissions.
- File Format:
- Resolution: Max A4 size (210mm x 297mm), RGB, 200 dpi, JPG format (Quality: 12). Minimum side length not less than 550px.
- File Name: English Surname + Given Name + Number + .jpg (e.g., chan_kai_yin_01.jpg)
- Submission Method: (Provisional)
- Search for '中華文化產業促進會' on Facebook, visit the competition event page to download the application form.
- Email artwork images, completed application form, and copy of payment receipt to [email protected].
- Pay the entry fee via specified methods within one week of successful upload.
- Work Criteria:
- Created after 2011.
- Based on the competition theme. Style and medium不限 (hand-drawn, digital illustrations, book illustrations, picture books, graffiti, game concept art accepted).
- Must be the original work of the participant.

- Finalist Award (15 winners): Works included in the touring exhibition.
- Note 1: Only participants in eligibility category (i) qualify for the Shanghai trip. All awardees receive certificates.
- Note 2: The touring exhibition is tentatively scheduled for Shanghai, Chongqing, Nanchong, etc.

- Wang Min (Jury Chair): Dean, School of Design, Central Academy of Fine Arts; Yangtze River Scholar Distinguished Professor; internationally renowned graphic designer; AGI member and China Chapter Chair.
- Zheng Dehua (Jury Member): Renowned historian and cultural scholar; PhD in History from HKU; former Senior Planning Editor at Joint Publishing (HK) and Director of the Centre for Chinese Cultural Studies, University of Macau; Emeritus Professor, University of Macau.
- Winson Ma (Jury Member): Hong Kong international brand figurine designer; Founder and Creative Director of '猿創作' (Yuen Creation); former President of the Hong Kong Illustrators Association (2009–2011).
