Presented by the Taipa Village Cultural Association, this exhibition showcases the exquisite fan paintings of Macau artist Chao Iok Leng. The exhibition presents the sublime aesthetics of traditional Chinese culture and painting, supported by the Cultural Development Fund of the Macau SAR Government.
Chao Iok Leng demonstrates undeniable mastery, infusing new life into the art of Chinese foldable fan painting with Chinese ink. This presentation blends practicality with beauty, where the fan's cooling function is elevated by the delicate artistic creations on its paper surface. This portable and functional artwork is a rare treasure in contemporary urban life. The exhibition aims to embody the noble ancient Chinese culture through this exotic object, enriching our daily lives.
Handheld folding fans originated in Asia, initially used for ventilation before becoming symbols of decoration, status, and personal taste. The tradition of Chinese fan painting began in the Tang Dynasty, inspiring artists to create with precision and skill on the delicate, semi-circular surface. Using ink requires exceptional focus, as this pigment, developed by Chinese civilization over two thousand years ago, is readily absorbed by the paper, making corrections or removal of painted areas difficult.
Chao Iok Leng, originally from Nanhai, Guangdong, has lived in Macau for generations. She developed a broad and deep interest in art from a young age. Her artistic journey includes studying under masters of both Chinese and Western painting, including Guan Wanli (gongbi flower-and-bird), Li Lun (Western painting), Luo Zuishan (flower-and-bird and landscape), Liang Zijiang (calligraphy), Zhao Weifu (Chinese and Western painting), Zhao Shao'ang (Lingnan School), Xu Jun (gongbi flower-and-bird in Beijing), and Song Weiyuan (freehand landscape and flower painting in Vancouver).
She currently holds several prestigious positions, including Vice President of the Macau Yee Yuan Calligraphy and Painting Association, Academic Advisor of the Macau Chinese Culture and Arts Association, and Art Advisor of the Macau Culture and Arts Society. Her first solo exhibition was held at the Luis de Camões Museum in 1987, with works collected by the museum.
