Organized by the Cultural Affairs Bureau, in collaboration with the Xiling Seal Engravers' Society and the Macao Calligraphy and Seal Carving Association, the "Centennial Seal Engraving: Xiling Society Past Presidents Exhibition" opened on November 30, 2013, at Tap Seac Gallery. This special exhibition showcases 39 pieces of calligraphy and painting by past presidents, including Wu Changshuo, Ma Heng, Zhang Zongxiang, Sha Menghai, Zhao Puchu, Qi Gong, and Rao Zongyi. Additionally, it features 24 rare oracle bone artifacts, never before publicly displayed, on loan from Macao collector Xiao Chunyuan.
Founded in 1904 by Zhejiang School seal engravers Ding Ren, Wang Ti, Wu Yin, and Ye Ming beside the Xiling Bridge on Solitary Hill in Hangzhou's West Lake, the Xiling Seal Engravers' Society is the world's oldest and most influential academic society dedicated to the study of seal engraving (Jinshi), epigraphy, calligraphy, and painting. With the motto "Preserve Jinshi, study seal art and painting," its first president was the master Wu Changshuo. Throughout its history, its members have been distinguished masters proficient in seal carving, calligraphy, painting, connoisseurship, archaeology, and literature, including pivotal figures in Chinese art history such as Li Shutong, Huang Binhong, Fu Baoshi, Pan Tianshou, and Feng Zikai.
Held in celebration of the Society's 110th anniversary, this exhibition presents the exquisite works of its past presidents. Their masterful techniques are deeply infused with Chinese philosophical thought and cultural heritage, making these pieces rare artistic treasures. The opening ceremony was graced by the attendance of three vice presidents of the Xiling Society and nearly ten leading professors of ancient script studies from prestigious universities including Tsinghua, Fudan, Zhejiang, Jilin, and Sun Yat-sen, who led delegations to observe the event.
