Father Michał Piotr Boym, SJ (1612–1659) was a pioneer of European sinology, hailed as the 'Polish Marco Polo', and a renowned 17th-century Polish missionary, sinologist, and painter. This exhibition vividly portrays his world through 40 reproductions of his works. Maps, scientific illustrations of fauna and flora, a human anatomy chart of immense historical significance and artistic value, plus drawings and valuable books showcase the amazing breadth of knowledge and insight of a man who played a paramount role in early Sino-Western cultural exchange.
The exhibition design ingeniously utilizes the garden of the Sir Robert Ho Tung Library, presenting Boym's painted animals in three-dimensional forms within the landscape, allowing visitors to traverse between reality and creation, bringing Boym's 400-year-old world to life.
The Sir Robert Ho Tung Library was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2005 as part of the 'Historic Centre of Macao'.
