Organized by the Macao Foundation, the 'Beginning and End as a Circle – Yi Heda 2013 Exhibition' will open on May 16, 2013. This exhibition features over 30 exquisite works by the renowned Beijing-based Zen artist, Mr. Yi Heda, offering a unique insight into his meditative and philosophical painting language.
Yi Heda, born in Beijing in 1964, is a professional painter. His recent creations revolve around the motif of the 'circle,' combined with ink-wash textures, forging a unique pictorial language rich in 'Eastern meditation' and 'Zen意境' (Zen artistic conception). Since the 1980s, he has held solo and group exhibitions worldwide. Notably, his solo exhibitions, such as 'Painting Every Day is a Step Backward' and 'Meditation from the East' in Baden-Württemberg, Germany, have received widespread acclaim.
Yi Heda's work expresses a subtle state of balance between harmony and disorder—a fundamental principle in Chinese Buddhism and Taoism. Like yin and yang, he uses conflicting elements to establish a perfect and complete equilibrium. Squares in his paintings melt into river-like, smooth black flows and meandering brushstrokes. Black and white merge, dancing a complex tango on the monochromatic plane of his works. Ultimately, the forms he expresses with neutral paint on pressure plates attest to the transient and impermanent nature of reality, much like colors fading into their dimming brilliance—a proof of ephemeral existence.
