Afterwards... – Li Xueying Solo Exhibition
My works often cannot be fully preserved due to the nature of their sites, leaving mostly images or videos. When works related to specific places are separated from their locations, they lose their original purpose and meaning. The recorded images are displayed in a new space, thereby bringing the work from a past site to the present exhibition venue, redefining and reinterpreting its meaning. This also connects two unrelated times and spaces through the images, re-examining the relationship between the work and the exhibition space and bestowing new site-specific meaning. Similar themes have been explored before—how the exhibition space is transformed from a neutral space into a space with specific attributes or character through the artist and the process of installing the work.
This is an experiment. It is impossible to recapture the feeling of the original creation through images alone, as the environment has changed. A new spatial context inevitably brings new spatial meaning. The change in location alters my own response to the work, and this new response brings new possibilities and continuity to past works.
Li Xueying graduated from the Master of Visual Arts program at Hong Kong Baptist University. Her personal creations are related to space, place, and people, exploring how individuals create a 'sense of belonging' within a space. Through daily observations of different places or objects, Li Xueying uses 'creating experiences' to sustain a personal humanistic sentiment, presenting the feelings of being in this city and attempting to use art to create meaning for life/living within the urban space of Hong Kong.
