A-Ma, the Goddess of Seafarers, is indisputably the most popular deity in Macau, as historically local people have had close ties with the sea. The famous A-Ma Temple near Macau's Inner Harbour stands on the spot where, according to legend, a lone fishing boat safely reached land following a terrible storm bearing the goddess in human form, who then ascended to the heavens.
As part of the annual A-Ma Festival celebrations, visitors are welcome to enjoy a traditional Chinese Opera performance.
The A-Ma Festival, celebrated on the 23rd day of the third lunar month (May 11, 2015), features a series of traditional activities including:
Celebrations begin on the eve of the festival with rituals such as returning offerings, returning firecrackers, and the lighting of the first incense at midnight, followed by prayers.
