A-Ma, the Goddess of Seafarers, is indisputably the most popular deity in Macau, as historically local people have had close ties with the surrounding sea. The famous A-Ma Temple in Macau’s Inner Harbor now stands on the spot where a boat, saved by the goddess, reached land safely.
The annual A-Ma Festival (also known as Tin Hau Festival or Mazu Festival) falls on the 23rd day of the third lunar month (April 22 in 2014). It commemorates the goddess who protects seafarers. Among the many traditional activities, the 'Flower Cannon Draw' is one of the most distinctive. Typically, 30 flower cannons are set up, with the 'Third Cannon' symbolizing prosperity and good fortune and considered the most efficacious, earning it the title 'King of Cannons'.
During the festival period, the A-Ma Temple is bustling with worshippers and incense. The five-day Chinese opera performance is held to celebrate the occasion with the public.
