The Dragon Boat Festival (Duanwu Festival) is here! The festival commemorates the ancient poet Qu Yuan from the Warring States period. The legend says that after he drowned himself in the river, local people rowed boats to search for him and threw rice dumplings (zongzi) into the water to feed the fish, hoping they would not eat his body. This gave rise to the traditions of eating zongzi and dragon boat racing.
Macau's celebration, the Macau International Dragon Boat Race, features intense competition on the usually tranquil Nam Van Lake. This year's event includes 11 categories and a total of 80 races.
