"Dissecting Sound" (Cantonese: caak3 seng1) is the first volume in the "sound by artists" book series published by Sound Pocket. The book is a curated collection of essays by Wong Chun Kut, exploring themes of music, band culture, industrial building communities, and government policies.
Wong Chun Kut is a musician, artist, author, lecturer, and former industrial building resident, who is also active in various social movements. He has been writing for many years, with his articles appearing in various local newspapers, magazines, and online media. Through his multifaceted identity, Wong explores and critiques different issues, offering readers a direction to listen to a Hong Kong with warmth and texture.
As Wong explains: "People pursue vacuum tube amplifiers and enjoy listening to vinyl records because the sound produced by these devices has a 'warm' and 'authentic' feeling. This feeling actually comes from uneven, thorn-like waveforms. Modern electric guitarists certainly understand this endless pursuit of tone: we can spend a lifetime, using different instruments and equipment as mediums, searching for the most ideal distortion—which in Cantonese is 'caak3 seng1' (拆聲)."
The "sound by artists" series highlights how Hong Kong artists, with their diverse concerns, continuously think and create, expressing their perceptions of the world through their own writing and sound. Artists provide us with artistic and critical perspectives to view ourselves and our surroundings. By listening carefully to their voices, one can find precious human connections within sound, art, and the written word, as well as societal problems and alternative choices. "Dissecting Sound" brings new insights to our taken-for-granted daily life. By questioning Hong Kong's bizarre phenomena, Wong connects different musicians, artists, and the city to our society, articulating what we dare not say today.
