Steven Mead is the world's most successful professional euphonium soloist, performing over 75 concerts annually with major symphony orchestras, wind bands, brass bands, and chamber ensembles. Recent collaborations as a soloist include the Stuttgart Philharmonic, Trondheim Symphony Orchestra, Raahe Symphony Orchestra, Helsinki Symphony Orchestra, Polish Symphony Orchestra, Minneapolis Modern Symphony Orchestra, and Japan Chamber Symphony Orchestra.
He has also performed as a soloist with renowned military bands, including the French Republican Guard Band, London Central Band, Italian Police Band, Dutch Marine Band, and the United States Army Band. He has been invited to major brass, wind, and low brass festivals worldwide, such as the European Brass Band Championships, the Norwegian National Brass Band Festival, and prestigious wind music festivals in the Netherlands, Belgium, Sweden, the USA, and Japan.
Steven has premiered over 250 new works for euphonium by composers including Philip Sparke, Martin Ellerby, James Curnow, Tadeus Kassatti, Torstein Aagaard Nilsen, Robert Jager, Vladimir Cosma, Rolf Wilhelm, Arthur Butterworth, John Reeman, Thomas Doss, Yasuhide Ito, Marco Putz, Rolf Rudin, and Hermann Pallhuber.
He holds the record for the most euphonium recordings, with 62 albums to his name. These include solo recordings, guest appearances, the 5-volume "World of the Euphonium" series, the 3-volume "Magic of the Euphonium" series, and 5 classic recordings with the British Tuba Quartet from 1991. He has also authored 16 educational books for euphonium. His recordings have won numerous international awards, including the British Wind Soloist Recording Award (2006, 2008), 4Barsrest Solo CD of the Year (2006, 2008), Brass Band CD of the Year (2008), and the Roger Bobo International Recording Award (2006, 2008).
A founding member of the esteemed Brass Band of Battle Creek (USA) in 1992, Steven taught euphonium at the Royal Northern College of Music in the UK for over 20 years. He was the first euphonium player in the UK to hold a higher degree and the first euphonium professor at the Royal Academy of Music, where he served as Head of Brass for five years. His students hail from across the globe, including the USA, Japan, Taiwan, Australia, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, France, and China, many of whom have gone on to join prestigious military bands, orchestras, or teach at universities in their home countries.
Passionate about education, Steven has taught at the Italian Euphonium Academy and conducted masterclasses in the Netherlands, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, Spain, Luxembourg, France, Norway, Sweden, Russia, Denmark, Finland, the USA, Canada, Japan, Singapore, Belgium, Australia, New Zealand, Lithuania, and Poland.
