Four small coffins are slowly loaded onto a plane, as a weeping mother says she is sending them to Morocco. The opening is already the conclusion; the director dispenses with suspense from the start, meticulously unfolding the process of a modern Greek tragedy. A young couple's new family welcomes several small lives, and their growing financial dependence on a white doctor, who acts as a surrogate father, adds strain. The doctor's controlling nature, the husband's weakness, conservative Islamic traditions, and white patriarchal dominance are not enough, on their own, to constitute tragedy. The film quietly observes the pressures and emotional shifts within the small family over several years, with the camera staying close to the mother as she gradually loses her mind. This is acclaimed as one of director Athina Rachel Tsangari's finest works, featuring Cannes Best Actress winner Ariane Labed ("Attenberg"), who won multiple awards for her performance.
