Lecture: Understanding Macau from a European Perspective
This lecture is honored to have the octogenarian Father Au Wa-sing guide us in exploring and understanding more of Macau's history from a European perspective.
The lecture will examine the relationship between European historical changes and Macau through events such as:
- The establishment of Lisbon as a capital
- The rise of Islam and the fall of the Holy Land, North Africa, and Iberia
- The Reconquista and the rise and decline of the Military Orders
- The relationship between King Denis and the Military Orders
- Prince Henry the Navigator and maritime exploration
- The discovery of the Far East sea route
- The rivalry between the British, Dutch, and Portuguese in the East (religion and trade)
It will also explore the meaning behind symbols like the "red background with white center" emblem of the Order of Christ found in the Vasco da Gama Garden and the Old Protestant Cemetery.
