Pablo Trapero returns to the violent, rain-soaked streets of Buenos Aires, this time to a lawless slum controlled by drug dealers and corrupt police. The residents take refuge under the protection of Father Julián (the ever-watchable Ricardo Darín). Julián recruits young priest Nicolás (Jérémie Renier, a favorite of the Dardenne brothers), a survivor of the Amazon River massacres. The two fight side by side, but their differing approaches—one conservative, one radical—lead to conflict. Nicolás also develops feelings for a female social worker. As a brutal turf war erupts in the slum, tensions reach a breaking point. From the opening massacre to the final standoff between police and civilians, the film maintains relentless tension, amplified by Michael Nyman's evocative score and the desolate, ruin-like setting, creating a powerful and epic cinematic experience.
