The story is set in a lower-class family in 1930s America. The mother, Amanda, was abandoned by her husband after marriage and is raising her two children alone. Her daughter Laura's congenital physical disability makes her extremely self-conscious; she avoids social contact and immerses herself in her world of glass animal figurines. For her daughter's future, Amanda spares no effort, using every method she can think of to bring her happiness. As the son, Tom shoulders the family's financial responsibilities but feels trapped, his dreams at odds with his reality, so he escapes into the world of cinema, dreaming of the day he can fly away from home.
One day, a male guest named Jim comes to the house for dinner, reigniting the long-buried hopes within each family member.
