The Children's Hour – Broadway Classic Play
A landmark Broadway play that premiered in 1934 to great success, running for 691 consecutive performances and earning widespread acclaim.
In 1961, the play was adapted into a film starring legendary actresses Audrey Hepburn and Shirley MacLaine.
The script tackles sensitive themes, including the then-taboo subject of lesbianism, which caused a sensation and became a major topic of discussion at the time.
Set in a private girls' boarding school in the United States, run by university friends Martha and Karen. After a private argument is accidentally overheard by a student, a pupil named Mary, driven by personal motives, falsely accuses Karen and her fellow teacher Martha of being in a romantic relationship. She amplifies the "forbidden" content of their argument. When Karen's boyfriend, Joseph, demands a confrontation, the cunning and clever Mary works hard to maintain her lie, causing the situation to spiral out of control and irrevocably altering the fates of all involved.
