Workshop Overview

This summer, kids become community detectives and create their own zines! The Summer Jubilo Children's Picture Book Workshop not only includes reading sessions but also uses many fun methods (like grocery shopping at the market, reading poetry by Camilo Pessanha in a cemetery, practicing interviews with neighbors, etc.) to explore the neighborhood. Participants will have the chance to make their own small books and even get them printed and published!

Workshop Schedule

Age Group 7–9: Saturday mornings, 10:00–12:30
Age Group 10–12: Monday afternoons, 15:00–17:30

Workshop Structure

Session ①: Community Little Detectives

Introduction: Overview of community observation and recording methods; reading related zines.
Activity: Collecting and recording characteristics of the St. Lazarus Parish (望德堂區).
Excursion: Streets and buildings around Jubilo.
Dates: July 24 (7–9 years), July 26 (10–12 years)

Sessions ②–⑤: Gathering Community Stories

Method: Thematic picture book readings to collect different community stories of St. Lazarus Parish.
Instruction: Zine-making tutorials, introduction to small publishing materials.
Goal: Young readers complete their personal community observation zines.

Session ②: Path of Peace

Readings: Picture book "War"; poetry collection "Dripping Hourglass" by Camilo Pessanha.
Excursion: St. Michael the Archangel Cemetery (西洋墳場).
Dates: July 31 (7–9 years), August 2 (10–12 years)

Session ③: Five Senses of Horta da Mitra (雀仔園)

Reading: Picture book "The World's Market".
Excursion: Horta da Mitra.
Dates: August 7 (7–9 years), August 9 (10–12 years)

Session ④: Community Spaces that Unite Residents

Reading: Picture book "My Town's (Extra) Ordinary People".
Excursion: Lou Lim Ioc Garden (盧廉若公園).
Dates: August 14 (7–9 years), August 16 (10–12 years)

Session ⑤: Old and New Changes in the Community

Readings: Picture books "The Changing Countryside" and "The Little House".
Excursion: Streets and buildings around Jubilo.
Dates: August 21 (7–9 years), August 23 (10–12 years)

Session ⑥: My Community Story

Introduction: The function and form of community newspapers.
Activity: Collaboratively creating a St. Lazarus Parish community newspaper; sharing personal observation zines among young readers.
Reading: Community observation-related community newspapers.
Dates: August 28 (7–9 years), August 30 (10–12 years)

Fees

Single Session: MOP 350 per session.
Full Course (6 Sessions): MOP 300 per session (total MOP 1800).

Instructor Introduction

Summer Yeong (楊冠瑩) is a Macau-born artist. Her creative practice includes photography, video, illustration, and installation, focusing on self-exploration, gender, and community culture. She is also a freelance writer. She has participated multiple times in the Ox Warehouse Children's Art Paradise exhibition series, with her installation works displayed in the Sir Robert Ho Tung Library Children's Reading Area. Her video works have been selected and screened at festivals including "KLEX Kuala Lumpur Experimental Film, Video & Music Festival 2018," "EXiM 2016 - Portugal & Macao Experimental Image Movement," "Macao International Film & Video Festival 2016," and "2016 CAAF Slovenian Book and Academic Culture Festival - Asian Unit Screening." She participated in the local community project "Small Town Story - Memories of Three Lamps District" (2017).
