Overview
The Macao Cultural Centre, under the Cultural Affairs Bureau, presents the critically acclaimed musical theatre production Songs of Lear by Poland's Song of the Goat Theatre on September 10. Hailed by the UK's The Herald as "the most moving," this performance reimagines Shakespeare's classic tragedy through a powerful fusion of vocal music, instrumental music, physical movement, and dramatic elements.
About the Performance
- Story: King Lear is one of Shakespeare's four great tragedies. The play tells the story of the aging King Lear, who divides his kingdom among his three daughters based on their flattery. His honest youngest daughter is disinherited, leading to a tragic chain of events of betrayal, madness, and war.
- Artistic Approach: Song of the Goat Theatre's adaptation extracts the essence of the Shakespearean classic, intensifying the original's gripping plot through unique music and interpretation. Over a dozen actors, without elaborate sets or costumes, paint an emotionally charged picture on stage, revealing humanity in its rawest form.
- Music & Language: The performance features a powerful soundscape where chants and ancient texts sung in English, Polish, and Latin intertwine with intense percussion. Twelve original songs, accompanied by instruments like the Indian harmonium and African lute, create a diverse and immersive auditory experience.
About the Troupe
Founded in 1996, Song of the Goat Theatre is one of Europe's most innovative theatre companies. They have been celebrated at festivals worldwide, including New York's "Next Wave Festival," the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, and Chile's "Santiago a Mil." The UK arts magazine Fest praised the company for its "stunning and awe-inspiring storytelling."
