In a rural primary school, a 'high-low pairing' system teams the top student with the class underachiever for mutual improvement. This arrangement leads to a deep friendship between Yang Jin and Wang Xiaobo. During summer vacation, they travel together back to their hometowns, visiting each other's families. Their journey is filled with warm, humorous encounters with local elders and villagers.
Yang Jin is, in fact, a representation of the director Yang Jin himself, with the story being 99% autobiographical. The first 'someone' in the title refers to traditional parents who often believe their own children are less clever than others. The second 'someone' refers to the two boys themselves, whose friendship is never about comparing who is better. This second 'someone' also represents director Yang Jin. At a time when mainland Chinese cinema was becoming increasingly fixated on box office success, this small, personal journey along the Yellow River stands apart, embracing its own path. It finds kinship in the simple, genuine emotional truth found in Yasujirō Ozu's film 'I Was Born, But...'.
