The São João Festival is one of the traditional Portuguese festivals in Macau. It commemorates the successful defense of Macau on June 24, 1622, when cannons were used to repel an invasion by Dutch forces. As this date coincides with the feast day of Saint John the Baptist, he is considered the patron saint of Macau, and the day is celebrated as the "São João Festival."
Every year, a variety of activities are held in Calçada da Igreja de S. Lázaro (St. Lazarus District) to celebrate the festival. The event features music, dance, performances by local bands, singers, and student bands. There are also booths offering traditional Macau games, Macanese and Portuguese delicacies, handicrafts, and books. The festival is rich in local character and creates a lively atmosphere, offering a chance to experience the traditional Portuguese charm of the city.
