The Saint John's Festival commemorates a historic event on June 24, 1622, when Macao successfully repelled an attempted Dutch invasion with cannon fire. As this victory coincided with the Feast Day of Saint John, the day is also celebrated as Saint John's Festival.
This year's festivities take place in the historic St. Lazarus Parish, specifically at Calcada da Igreja de S. Lazaro (commonly known as 'Crazy Lane'), an area named after a former leprosarium.
