A pop-up script reading session ahead of the full production of the British black comedy Radiant Vermin (My Home Makeover Secret). Get a first taste of this absurd and magical play.
Radiant Vermin is a magical realist black comedy by British playwright Philip Ridley. A young couple, Olie and Jill, receive a letter from a 'Government Community Renewal Service' officer, offering them a free house in a new development zone on the condition that they decorate it themselves to attract others to the area. Moving into a bare, utility-less house, they discover they can obtain luxury furnishings simply by using '??'.
Is this a benevolent policy to boost the community economy? A scheme to cleanse the 'undesirables'? Or a farce of twisted humanity? The play, first staged in 2015, uses a devil's bargain to precisely express the absurdities of the modern world—the funnier it gets, the more troublesome it becomes.
