A long-established tradition, the Procession of Our Lady of Fátima recalls the revelation of the Virgin Mary to peasant children in 1917 in Fátima, Portugal. The event is a major annual festival for Macao's Catholic community, held in May to honor Our Lady of Fátima, revered by the Portuguese.
On the evening of the festival, devout believers gather at the World Heritage site of St. Dominic's Church (also known as the Church of the Rosary). Women dressed in white carry the statue of the Virgin Mary, leading a solemn procession. The route passes by landmarks such as the Holy House of Mercy, the Cathedral, Senado Square, and the Praia Grande waterfront, with participants singing hymns and reciting prayers along the way.
The procession culminates at the hilltop Penha Chapel (Our Lady of Penha Chapel), where an open-air mass is held. The scene is both lively and solemn, attracting large numbers of respectful followers and visitors. At the tail end of the procession, three children dressed as shepherds follow, commemorating the miracle of Our Lady of Fátima's apparition to three shepherd children.
Even for those without religious beliefs, following the procession through Macao's streets offers a unique opportunity to experience the city's rich multicultural heritage.
