A New Year's blessing for classical music lovers from the saxophone. The Macau Wind Band Association's "Phone Show Carnival" series celebrates its fourth year. This edition features a special collaboration with young Korean saxophonist Dr. Branda Jinwoo Choi, joining conductor Lui Hon Cheong's performance team alongside pianist Poon Ho Suet. Together, they lead the Macau Wind Band Association Saxophone Ensemble to present poetic and picturesque tango pieces for saxophone enthusiasts at the start of the year.
Since conductor Lui Hon Cheong took over as music director for the "Phone Show Carnival" series, the concert's musical style has evolved from its initial experimental nature to focus on tango music. Following the "String Shadows, Wind Sounds" concert in May 2018, the Romantic to 20th-century musical style became the foundation of his work. Notably, pieces by Astor Piazzolla, the progenitor of modern tango, frequently appear, with the finale of "Libertango" becoming a tradition.
The concert's repertoire focuses on modern tango music. This era of tango explores various characteristic elements beyond dance, attempting to interpret the complexity of human emotions. Compared to traditional tango works, Piazzolla's contribution lies in liberating the music from its traditional dance function, allowing tango to serve artistic expression beyond dance. As contemporary tango, it moves beyond the traditional themes of nostalgia and love, giving rise to a wider range of emotions such as hope, longing, loss, and gain.
For the audience, we invite you to feel the composer's imagery within the musical phrases, to paint your own unique tango from the notes, and to write your life's story through music.
