What is a hero? Self-sacrificing, righteous, serving the nation and its people, unyielding, just, magnanimous, principled, ambitious, fearless, intelligent and brave, hating evil, perfect, courageous, responsible, extraordinary...
In ancient times, there was Nüwa mending the heavens, Hou Yi shooting down the suns, Yu the Great taming the floods, Yue Fei's loyal service to the country... and then what?
In times of chaos, we need heroes. In times of prosperity, we need heroes even more. In chaos, heroes emerge from the people to lead us forward. In prosperity, heroes sit securely on their altars, stabilizing the people's hearts and pointing us toward the correct path. But who exactly are the heroes? What do they look like? Like you or like me? Who carved them into the statues in temples? Who gave them wings in the legends?
Local physical theatre director Mok Sin Teng and Hong Kong physical theatre creator Ng Siu Hei both coincidentally studied Jacques Lecoq's physical theatre creation methods and performance techniques in Europe. For their first collaboration, the two take Lu Xun's 'Old Tales Retold' as a blueprint, drawing inspiration from folk tales past and present. Using elements of physical theatre, masks, puppetry, objects, and multimedia, they portray the myriad faces of heroes.
