Fang Fang is a theatrical adaptation of the short story "Xi Fangping" from the classic Chinese literary work Strange Tales from a Chinese Studio (Liaozhai Zhiyi).
Synopsis: "Until the great injustice is redressed, this heart will not die!" After his father's wrongful death, Xi Fangping is determined to venture into the underworld to seek justice. There, he uncovers a conspiracy where the entire underworld hierarchy has colluded to steal his father's allotted lifespan. Enraged, Xi Fangping vows to overturn the verdict at any cost, even if it means disturbing the Jade Emperor and turning the underworld upside down.
This production is the third consecutive year that the Rolling Puppet Alternative Theatre creative team presents a Chinese literature x puppet theatre work for the Ox Warehouse Theatre Season, following The Withered Wall and Medicine. Director Lin Tingting and producer Zhao Qi, who recently completed their Master's degrees at the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague, collaborated once again with playwright Pan Huiqiang, stage manager Xiao Meiqi, and musician Bruce Pun. The play stars veteran actors Chen Feili, Chen Shiping, and Ou Zhiheng. Lin Tingting and Zhao Qi traveled to Spain to learn new puppet-making techniques, integrating puppets and masks into the performance to transform the rugged Ox Warehouse space into a contemporary hell.
