About Film Photography
In an era dominated by digital photography, a dedicated group still uses film cameras. Just as painting was declared dead after the invention of the camera but continues to thrive over a century later, film photography persists. While the proliferation of image capture makes everyone a photographer and the internet grants everyone a platform, leading to an overflow of images, the inconvenience of film photography indirectly encourages photographers to be more deliberate and spend more time contemplating what photography truly is.
This edition of Ox Talk invites four Hong Kong-based practitioners to share their perspectives:
- CC, founder of the Hong Kong film specialty store FilMe and Guinness World Record holder for the largest collection of different film types, will discuss whether film will disappear.
- Chan Wai Kong, a Hong Kong photographer who has self-published 13 personal photobooks, shoots exclusively with film cameras and develops the photos himself, treating photography as part of his daily life.
- Hui Chung, a graphic designer who shoots only with film cameras and self-develops, rejects all quick methods in our information-saturated age to allow himself time to reflect.
- Ho Ka Wing, a graphic designer who values the integrity and layering of images, prefers to shoot with high-quality film cameras, returning to a mindset of precision and limited quantity in a fast-food era.
