In ancient Greece, men were often away fighting long wars, leaving their wives and families behind. Lysistrata, a brave and determined woman, has had enough. She rallies the women of Greece to take a radical stand for peace: a sex strike. They vow to withhold all physical intimacy from their husbands until the men lay down their arms and end the war. This classic comedy explores themes of power, gender, and peace through a bold and humorous lens.
This is a modern adaptation of the classic Greek comedy Lysistrata by Aristophanes, often considered one of history's first feminist texts. The production is presented by the Dream Theatre Arts Association.
The production retains elements of traditional Greek theatre, including the use of masks and a chorus, while incorporating witty dialogue and interactive moments where actors break the fourth wall to engage with the audience. It's a daring outdoor performance that aims to recreate the atmosphere of an ancient Greek amphitheatre.
