Contemporary British playwright Simon Stephens is one of the most prolific writers in recent years. Having taught young writers for many years at the UK's Royal Court Theatre, which has nurtured many famous playwrights, his works are widely performed across Europe.
"Cheok Theatre" has invited Hong Kong's "Cacophony" to collaborate, bringing Simon Stephens' Song From Far Away to Macau audiences in 2020.
We are first hosting a "Reading and Sharing Session" on December 14, 2019, exploring his writing world through three of Simon Stephens' works.

Song From Far Away is a new work written by Simon Stephens in 2015. It tells the story of a protagonist who returns home after many years away to attend his brother's funeral, reflecting on his relationships with his brother, family, and his own connection to the world. The entire text is framed as letters to his brother, consisting solely of the protagonist's monologue, revealing the psychological journey of his travels and life experiences, leading the audience to witness the often lonely and empty state of modern urban life.
The performance deeply explores different facets of "loss" with delicate and genuine emotion. The epistolary and monologue form opens a broad space for interpretation, depending entirely on the choices of the director and creative team. This performance will use various theatrical elements to approach the narrative. The actor's performance will engage in dialogue with space, lighting, and sound, organically combining with various designs to form a cohesive whole, presenting the text's essence, showcasing imagery and atmosphere, and revealing the nihilism and loneliness in contemporary life, prompting the audience to reflect on their own existence.
