Based on the true story of the 20th-century Düsseldorf 'Ripper' in Germany. On the eve of World War II, a series of horrifying murders in Düsseldorf plunges the city into panic. The murderer, Peter Kurten, is captured. Young, ambitious, and idealistic lawyer Justus Wehner is appointed as his defense attorney, attempting to argue insanity to save Kurten from execution. In his quest to find a 'normal' defense, he uncovers Kurten's brutal childhood, tragic inner world, and the unusual love between him and his wife, Frau Kurten, along with Kurten's deepest desires.
