Everybody is aware that in the St. Lazarus Parish (Freguesia de São Lázaro) of Macao, there is a landmark known as the "Home for Dames" (Albergue da Santa Casa da Misericórdia, commonly called "婆仔屋"). Inside its courtyard stand two huge and tall camphor trees, stretching their strong, green arms like patron saints. But what history and stories have these two towering guardians protected?
Regina Dance Group will escort the audience into the "Home for Dames" through the form of a dance drama, peeking into the moving stories of its former inhabitants and witnessing the historical transformation of this iconic building.
The story revolves around the era from the 1940s through the 1990s. It follows "Han Tse," a widow who fled to Macao to escape the Japanese invasion of China. She was taken in by the "Home for Dames," which completely rewrote her tragic fate. As the historical mission of the "Home for Dames" eventually came to an end, its residents left, leaving the place empty. It was later reopened as a cultural and creative space, injecting new life and vitality into this old district. The story is cleverly interwoven with Macao's traditional festivals, reviving the old folk customs of the city, making it a dance drama full of Macao sentiment.
