Chinese calligraphy is the art of writing Chinese characters. From a perspective that disregards the meaning of the text, Chinese calligraphy is a unique form of visual art, yet this uniqueness does not prevent those unfamiliar with Chinese characters from appreciating it.
To complement the "Old Knowledge, New Insights – Ma Guoquan Calligraphy and Seal Carving Exhibition," the Macao Museum of Art is organizing the "Old Knowledge, New Insights: Calligraphy Copying Competition." Submitted works will be uploaded to the Museum's Facebook page. The Museum will select twenty winning pieces based on a combination of public votes (likes) and professional judging. Winners will receive a copy of the exhibition catalogue "Old Knowledge, New Insights – Ma Guoquan Calligraphy and Seal Carving Collection."
Target Audience
- Visitors of the "Old Knowledge, New Insights" exhibition. There is no age limit.
Submission Requirements & Method
- Participants must copy designated works from the "Old Knowledge, New Insights" exhibition. Each person may submit up to three copies. (The original works for copying can be downloaded from the "Rules and Forms" section on the event webpage.)
- Each artwork must not exceed 100cm x 50cm and must be created using a brush and Xuan paper.
- When submitting, please include the participant's name, Macao mobile number, gender, and email address.
- Submit in person or by mail to: Reception Desk, 1st Floor, Macao Museum of Art, Avenida de Xian Xing Hai, Macao. Please mark the envelope with "Old Knowledge, New Insights: Calligraphy Copying Competition." (The postmark date will be considered the submission date.)

- Dates: May 7 to June 13, 2013
- Time: 10:00 – 19:00 daily
- Note: Closed on Mondays.
New Works Upload Schedule
New submissions will be uploaded to Facebook every Friday on: May 24, May 31, June 7, and June 14.
Winner Announcement
- The list of winners will be announced on the Macao Museum of Art website on Tuesday, July 9, 2013.
- Winners will be notified via SMS and must collect their prize (the exhibition catalogue) at the Museum's 1st-floor reception desk within a specified period by presenting the SMS.
Remarks
- The "Old Knowledge, New Insights – Ma Guoquan Calligraphy and Seal Carving Exhibition" is on display at the Special Exhibition Gallery of the Macao Handover Gifts Museum from April 25 to June 16, 2013.
- The Macao Museum of Art reserves the final right of decision for this activity.
