Join the Macao Science Center for a special lecture by Prof. Shuji Nakamura, the 2014 Nobel Laureate in Physics. The lecture will delve into the development and future applications of high-brightness blue light-emitting diodes (LEDs) based on indium gallium nitride (InGaN) substrates.
Professor Shuji Nakamura graduated from the University of Tokushima in 1977 with a degree in Electronic Engineering and obtained a master's degree in the same subject two years later. He then joined Nichia Corporation in Tokushima. He was awarded a Doctor of Engineering degree from the University of Tokushima in 1994. He left Nichia Corporation in 1999 to become a professor of engineering at the University of California, Santa Barbara. In 2014, he was one of three recipients of the Nobel Prize in Physics for the invention of efficient blue light-emitting diodes, which enabled bright and energy-saving white light sources.
This lecture describes the history of the development of InGaN-based blue LEDs. Currently, LEDs are predominantly grown on sapphire substrates. The emerging GaN-on-GaN technology promises to further improve LED performance.
