“Night-change Salon” is a series of events organized by Homegrown Theatre, inviting different local artists and guests to share and converse with local art enthusiasts. The activities focus on topics such as trends in contemporary theatre, urban cultural event planning, and observations on performance aesthetics, aiming to foster exchange and reflection on local art, culture, and theatre development.
Round 1 features two Macau theatre practitioners who studied at the National Theatre Academy in Prague, Czech Republic: Ting Ting Lam and Qi Zhao. They will share insights into alternative theatre in Europe and festival management strategies. This session is ideal for drama students and individuals interested in theatre culture and cultural management strategies.
“Alternative Theatre,” a highly controversial classification in theatre, how is it distinguished from mainstream theatre? What was the development of the so-called “alternative” in the West during the late 20th century? Even contemporary European theatre artists find it hard to give a definitive answer. This sharing will introduce various forms such as Documentary Theatre, Physical Theatre, New Circus, Photo Theatre, Audio Theatre, Puppet, and Object Theatre, exploring the diversity of theatrical art and seeking more possibilities for its artistic or social functions.
Macau hosts numerous international-level cultural and arts festivals annually, widely believed to attract tourists worldwide, boost tourism-related industries, enhance Macau's international image, and increase its visibility. From a festival management perspective, do these events achieve these goals? Cultural festivals cannot be evaluated solely from an economic angle. How then should their effectiveness be assessed from social and cultural perspectives? This lecture will also share the speaker's experiences with various theatre festivals in Europe during their studies, offering European insights to explore future directions for Macau.
