New Director Project 2014: First Night
Written and Directed by: Long Zhanpeng
Cast: Chen Shiping, Yan Xiaohui, Zhao Qiye, Jiang Xinyi
Known as Pengzai, he is part of the first generation of backstage professionals in Macau who transitioned from amateur to professional. Having worked behind the scenes for many years, he is widely recognized as a lighting designer. Over the past fifteen years, he has enhanced the appeal of numerous theatrical productions in Macau through his mastery of light and shadow. After years of storytelling through lighting, he now finally tells a story as a director—a story about the "first night" of a "incense and candle" factory owner. The factory owner, facing business decline and feeling cornered, seeks pleasure at a one-woman brothel, deciding to spend his final days happily. During this process, he encounters a taxi driver seeking "release" and a talkative, bitter prostitute. These three strangers, whose lives never intersect, meet in this small space. This experience prompts the factory owner to reflect on his life and the city he inhabits.
As Pengzai takes on the role of a "new" director, what the audience may witness is not merely the birth of a new director, but rather how someone who has navigated countless twists and turns behind Macau's theater scenes looks back and quietly examines his own footprints on the stage.
