Nam Van Sentiments is part of the 10th Step Out Theatre Book Festival. In 2013, the festival created the environmental theatre piece Nam Van Sentiments to commemorate the late Macau poet Mr. Hu Xiaofeng. Using cross-media elements like mime, installation, and sound, it presented snippets of the poet's life and his poetic sentiments towards Nam Van.
In 2019, the festival extends this theatrical creation into imagery. Three artists—Zheng Dong, Zheng Zhiwei, and Chen Shiping—use their lenses to capture the coastline from memory: ever-expanding, paved into roads, and perpetually traversed by countless vehicles.
Nam Van Sentiments is Hu Xiaofeng's only surviving poetry collection, featuring works from his early years living around the Nam Van area. The poems praise the scenery, use it to express emotions, and critique social issues. Revisiting these works is not just an act of nostalgia but also a way to look back at the changes in Macau's people, events, and landscapes through the sensitive lens of an immigrant poet.
"演書" (Yan Shu) is not a term coined by Step Out; its origin is forgotten. The "Step Out Theatre Book Festival" began in the early summer of 2010. Is it about adapting literary works for theatre? Using literature to inspire theatrical creation? Or finding new theatrical and performative possibilities through reading? We cannot find a single definition for the "Book Festival," because over ten years, it has only been able to continuously explore, practice, and overturn its own answers.
The 10th festival will revisit and further develop three out of its past 27 works—not as re-performances but as deepening or extensions of the original experiments.
