A comet named Tiamat visits Earth every 1200 years. One day, Tachibana Taki, a boy living in Yotsuya, Tokyo, and Miyamizu Mitsuha, a girl living in the mountain town of Itomori, Hida, begin to swap bodies whenever they fall asleep or are in a half-asleep state. They wake up remembering nothing, feeling as if they had a strange dream. However, they soon become aware of this phenomenon. In their confusion, they start leaving messages on each other's smartphones and arranging schedules, gradually getting used to the body-switching and interfering with each other's lives.
Mitsuha not only enjoys the Tokyo life she has always longed for but also helps Taki get closer to Okudera-senpai, the beautiful senior at his part-time job, facilitating a date with her. Meanwhile, Taki, with his masculine demeanor, helps Mitsuha become more popular at her school.
