Every Sunday night in September, the "Monkey Show Opens" shadow puppet performances will be held, featuring three plays in one night.
1. The Legend of the Sea An adaptation of a classic play by the "Shadow Legend Theatre Troupe." It premiered in 2017 at the Dom Pedro V Theatre and has since toured many local primary and secondary schools. The play uses humor to raise awareness about marine environmental protection. It returns this year with a spirit of heritage, dedicated to those who love green living.
2. San Kio Scenery Next to the city's oldest cinema, Cineteatro Alegria, the oldest form of "film"—shadow puppetry—is set to premiere. At the crossroads of past and present, familiar scenes of neighborhood camaraderie unfold. What interesting sparks will fly when "shadow puppets" meet "San Kio"? This year's play focuses on the people, events, and things of the San Kio district, reflecting on the current ecological environment through various aspects of daily life.
3. The Battle of Taipa Reclamation In the year 2349, unscrupulous merchants in Macau use advanced technology to open a door to another dimension, engaging in technological colonization and large-scale plundering of resources to fund massive century-long projects. Faced with this sudden invasion, should the residents of the other dimension submit and allow their homeland to be trampled, or should they resist fiercely to defend the primitive ecology of their world? This is the first locally created shadow puppet play in Macau—not to be missed!
