Valkyrie Octopus: The Lucky Art Mascot Gathers Fortune from All Directions

Celebrating the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China and the 20th anniversary of the Macao SAR, MGM brings its first major art collection, "Valkyrie Octopus," back to Macao to share the art and celebrate the season. This large-scale installation was originally created in 2015 by renowned Portuguese artist Joana Vasconcelos specifically for MGM Macau.

About the Artwork

"Valkyrie Octopus" is a dazzling art mascot that embodies a cultural journey along the Maritime Silk Road. The artist gathered symbols of luck and fortune from various places, including Italy, Spain, and Portugal, weaving them into the piece.

• A Wishing Tree of Light: Over a thousand LED lights shimmer like a brilliant wishing tree, hoping for everyone's dreams to blossom and bear fruit.
• A Quilt of Blessings: Inspired by the Chinese tradition of the "Hundred Families Quilt," which collects blessings from different households, the octopus features over 4,000 meters of vividly colored and patterned fabrics that piece together these wishes.
• Interactive Tetris Sculptures: Three Tetris-shaped sculptures utilize the Portuguese contemporary aesthetic of Azulejo (glazed tiles). The "Arabesque" pattern on the tiles, known as "scroll grass pattern" in China, is considered an auspicious symbol representing health and longevity. Guests are invited to sit on these sculptures and immerse themselves in the search for more lucky blessings.

The artwork is said to contain hidden blessings for wealth, family, love, health, and career, spreading fortune throughout MGM Macau. Art can be interpreted in countless ways.
