Flamenco, Architecture, and Poetry
Let’s marvel at an enchanting, free flair of flamenco in a performance inspired by the sensual lines of Brazilian master architect Oscar Niemeyer. Spanish top choreographer and dancer Maria Pagés created Utopia—a beautiful, intense piece that is also a reflection on the words of writers like Baudelaire, Benedetti, and Saramago.
Pagés’ company returns to Macao with an exquisite group of musicians and dancers who skillfully use their bodies, performing to the soulful sound of both flamenco and Brazilian music played and sung live on stage. The contrast between the dancers' costumes and Pagés’ large flowing red dress takes hold of the set as the cast intimately explores imagination and idealism as inevitable vehicles for change.
The idea for this stunning contemporary work began to take shape in 2010 when the choreographer visited Niemeyer’s studio in Rio. Impressed by the architect’s humanity and commitment to society, Pagés conceived a dance piece about solidarity, commitment, and the fleetingness of life.
Established in 1990, the company has performed at the world’s most prestigious stages, from New York to Istanbul, including tours to Singapore, Hong Kong, and Macao (where it performed in 2002).
Flamenco fans and performing arts lovers should not miss the high level of artistry featured in Utopia. Praised as one of the best live shows of our time, this unique performance is the Flamenco Queen’s most valuable jewel.
