"Das Lied von der Erde (The Song of the Earth)" was one of Gustav Mahler’s last completed works, finished one year after his diagnosis with a congenital heart disease in 1907. The lyrics, translated by Hans Bethge, are derived from a set of Tang dynasty poems titled "Die chinesische Flöte (The Chinese Flute)" by Li Tai-Po, Mong Kao-Yen, Wang Wei, and Tchang Tsi. This monumental synthesis of symphony and song is often considered his farewell to life. Since its premiere in Munich, Germany, in 1911, it has never ceased to move countless audiences.
As November 20th marks the 110th anniversary of the premiere, two outstanding Chinese singers active throughout Europe and Asia—Liu Siman (Alto) and Ren Demin (Tenor)—will join the Macao Orchestra and the Shanghai Philharmonic Orchestra. Under the baton of Maestro Lu Jia, they will perform this epic, not-to-be-missed masterpiece, presenting Mahler's soul-searching artistic concept of "East meets West."
