A National Treasure Lineup Presents Two Classic Operas The National Peking Opera Company will present two national-level Peking Opera masterpieces for Macau audiences over two consecutive days. Led by Yu Kuizhi, a leading figure in contemporary Peking Opera art, and Li Shengsu, a successor of the Mei School, the company brings its strongest lineup to Macau.
The opening traditional repertoire, "Red Mane Steed", tells the love story of Xue Pinggui and Wang Baochuan. After being separated for eighteen years, the couple reunites. With the help of Princess Daizhan, Xue Pinggui captures Chang'an and proclaims himself emperor.
The grand finale, the renowned opera "Farewell My Concubine", is one of the classic Qingyi (young female role) pieces of the Mei School, created by Peking Opera master Mei Lanfang. The story is set at the end of the Chu-Han Contention. Xiang Yu, the Hegemon-King of Western Chu, is trapped by Han Xin's strategy of ambushes from ten sides. The Han camp then employs the strategy of "songs of Chu on all sides," making the Chu soldiers homesick and causing their morale to collapse as they flee. Yu Ji, who has followed him in battle for years, realizes the dire situation and resolves to die to sever their bond. Defeated, Xiang Yu feels he has no face to see his elders east of the Yangtze River and commits suicide by the Wu River.
The Charm of National Quintessence – Not to Be Missed Founded in 1955 with Mei Lanfang as its first president, the National Peking Opera Company has inherited, created, and staged nearly 600 outstanding works over half a century. It has toured over fifty countries and regions across five continents, earning international acclaim for Peking Opera culture and playing a vital role in cultural exchange. This visit to Macau features the company's strongest performance lineup presenting two Peking Opera classics, delivering the authentic charm of this national treasure art form—an absolute must-see.
