Formerly known as the Macau National Library, it was founded in 1895 and was initially affiliated with the Liceu de Macau, with its premises located in the St. Augustine's Monastery. The library's development journey was arduous. Between 1917 and 1929, it relocated successively to St. Joseph's Seminary, the Bela Vista Hotel building, the Tap Seac Disability Shelter, and the Municipal Council building (predecessor of the Municipal Affairs Bureau), before experiencing a longer period of stability. In 1983, it moved to a classical building on Avenida do Conselheiro Ferreira de Almeida, where it has since grown and developed.
Today, the services of the Macau Central Library have become increasingly diversified. In addition to basic services such as reader card registration, photocopying, consultation of the Macau Special Administrative Region Gazette, book borrowing, and newspaper and periodical reading, it has added services including microform consultation, Macau reference and advisory services, overdue periodical reading, broadband internet access, electronic news information, and electronic resource databases.
To meet reader demand, the library underwent internal renovation works in early 2007, expanding its usable space and number of seats, rearranging furniture, and adding reading facilities. The two floors cover a total area of 1,371 square meters, with approximately 271 reading seats. The collection holds about 102,560 volumes (including approximately 39,934 volumes of Macau materials), 672 reels of microforms, 5,268 audio-visual items, 97 types of newspapers from various regions, and 458 types of magazines. Overall, its collection focuses on Macau materials, English and Portuguese books, and historical documents related to Portugal in the Far East.
