Founded in 1983, the Macao Orchestra is a professional performing ensemble under the Cultural Affairs Bureau of the Macao SAR Government. It has become one of Asia's outstanding symphony orchestras, blending Eastern and Western cultures and interpreting classical and contemporary masterpieces, playing a vital role in the musical life of Macao's citizens and international audiences.
Since 2001, the orchestra expanded to a double-wind formation and has grown into a medium-sized ensemble of over 60 musicians, comprising talented young artists from more than 10 countries and regions. Under the leadership of Music Director and Principal Conductor Lü Jia since 2008, the orchestra has consistently presented performances in "concert seasons," staging over 90 concerts and outreach activities each season to showcase a comprehensive and diverse repertoire.
The orchestra frequently collaborates with renowned international musicians, conductors, and arts groups, including Plácido Domingo, Krystian Zimerman, Stephen Kovacevich, Boris Berezovsky, Leonidas Kavakos, Barry Douglas, Sergio Azzolini, Kirill Gerstein, Ivan Martin, Yulianna Avdeeva, Henning Kraggerud, Shunske Sato, Mario Brunello, Fou Ts'ong, Lang Lang, Yundi Li, Sarah Chang, Ning Feng, Jian Wang, Tan Dun, Daniel Oren, Teatro Regio di Torino, English National Ballet, The Philadelphia Orchestra, Latvian National Opera, Lithuanian National Opera, and the Korean Chamber Orchestra.
The orchestra is regularly invited on tours domestically and abroad. Recent highlights include being the guest of honor at the 2015 Brucknerfest in Austria, performing at the 2016 "La Folle Journée" festival in Japan, and participating in the Shenzhen "Belt and Road" International Music Festival in 2017 and 2019. Its performances have reached over 30 cities in mainland China, Europe (Austria, Switzerland, Hungary, Portugal, Spain), the USA, Japan, and South Korea. In March 2018, the orchestra made its debut cultural exchange performance in Myanmar, and in October of the same year, it performed at the Shanghai International Arts Festival, receiving widespread acclaim for its exquisite artistry and showcasing Macao's cultural achievements. In November 2019, to commemorate the 20th anniversary of Macao's handover, the 70th anniversary of the founding of the PRC, and the 80th anniversary of the premiere of the "Yellow River Cantata," the orchestra was invited to perform by the China NCPA Orchestra and the Zhuhai Huafa & CPAA Grand Theater, presenting a historically significant concert of Chinese works.
Since 2018, the orchestra has launched the "Youth Audience Program," offering various engaging music activities for young people of different ages to enhance their appreciation of classical music. Additionally, through community outreach initiatives like the "Love Music, Love Sharing" concert series, the orchestra brings music directly to schools, communities, and underprivileged groups, significantly expanding its audience and supporting young musical talents.
