Overview
The Macao International Film and Video Festival 2014, organized by the Macao Cultural Centre, is an annual cinematic celebration running from March 27 to May 11. Now in its eighth year, the festival continues to offer a diverse feast of visual and auditory delights for film enthusiasts.
Festival Sections
1. International Selection
Showcasing 13 acclaimed new films from around the world, including Japan, Taiwan, Germany, France, Argentina, Mexico, Canada, Spain, Russia, and Egypt. Highlights include:
- The Way He Looks (Brazil) – Winner of multiple German film awards.
- Suddenly, Hell (France) – Cannes Best Director award-winning film.
- Twelve Nights (Taiwan) – A moving film produced by Giddens Ko and Sonia Sui.
- R100 (Japan) – A boundary-pushing film by director Hitoshi Matsumoto.
- The Square (Egypt/USA) – Nominated for the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature.
- Witching & Bitching (Spain) – A bizarre horror-comedy by Álex de la Iglesia.
- I'm So Excited! (Spain) – A comedy by Pedro Almodóvar.
- The Perfect Diary of a Lady's Maid (Argentina).
2. Macao-Made
This platform for local video works will be held in May, featuring 26 selected local productions including documentaries, short films, and animations. It includes world premieres of works commissioned under the "Macao Images – New Forces 2014" initiative and presents awards to encourage creative and high-quality filmmaking.
3. Extended Activities
A series of workshops, talks, and creative challenges:
- Workshops (conducted by instructors from the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts):
- "Before Filming: Practical Film Production Workshop" (April 12)
- "It All Starts with a Story: Screenwriting Workshop" (April 26)
- "Finding Truth Through the Lens: Documentary Production Workshop" (April 27)
- Talk: "Documenting Art – Starting from The Six Seasons" by Hong Kong film critic Ka Ming (May 3).
- 48-Hour Film Challenge (April 18–20): Participants create a 3-minute short film based on a given theme within 48 hours. Prizes include cash awards.
