About the Exhibition

Spring, traditionally a season of new beginnings, arrives in Macao after three challenging years of the pandemic. This edition of the Macao Contemporary Film and Video Exhibition serves as a transitional period, looking back at the past to gather strength for the future.

Film Selection & Program

This year's exhibition showcases a diverse range of moving image works:

• Local Works: 26 local productions, including:
  • 10 films from the Macao Cultural Centre's 'Macao Images – New Forces' production grant scheme.
  • 12 films selected from an open call for entries across Macao.
  • 4 films recommended by four local tertiary institutions: University of Macau, Macao Polytechnic University, Macao University of Science and Technology, and University of Saint Joseph.
• Regional Works: 11 outstanding works from Hong Kong, Mainland China, and Taiwan, providing a perspective on the vision and caliber of young creators in the greater Chinese region.

The selected works collectively explore themes of transition, adaptation, healing from trauma (be it the pandemic, family, or personal growth), and a renewed focus on Macao's ecological and natural environment.

Awards & Competition

A 'Grand Jury Prize' competition is established for local works. This year's jury features significant figures from across the region:

• Song Wen, Founder of the FIRST International Film Festival (Xining, China).
• Nicole Fan, Program Director of the ifva Awards (Hong Kong).
• Wei-Chen Chen, Curator of the Golden Harvest Awards (Taiwan).

Their selection process began with a preliminary review by Hong Kong film critic Qiao Yisi, who selected 12 finalists from nearly 40 submissions.

Audience Engagement

• Post-screening Talks: Multiple sessions will be held, facilitating dialogue between local filmmakers and the audience.
• Audience Choice Award: Viewers can cast their vote for their favorite film.
