The Kun Iam Ecumenical Centre, opened on March 21, 1999, was designed by Portuguese architect and sculptor Cristina Rocha Leiria. The centrepiece is a 20-meter-tall, 50-ton bronze statue of the Goddess of Mercy (Kun Iam), with a serene expression, symbolizing universal harmony and peaceful coexistence among peoples. The statue rests on a lotus pedestal. The interior dome features murals inspired by the teachings of Laozi, Confucius, Mencius, and Buddhism, created by the late Macao artist Guo Huan and his wife Hu Ru. The area from the centre to the Macao Science Museum forms a popular seaside promenade integrating sightseeing, leisure, culture, and entertainment.
To welcome the Lunar New Year, the Kun Iam Ecumenical Centre hosts the "Painting Lotus at the Lotus Center" family art workshop. This unique experience invites families to use water-writing cloths to trace lotus sketches from the "Museum of Art Lotus-themed Exhibition" displayed within the centre.
