Objective
Enrich Macau higher education students' knowledge of the Portuguese language and culture, increase their interest in learning Portuguese, enhance their language skills, cultivate bilingual talents, and promote Macau's unique blend of Eastern and Western cultures.
Eligibility
Participants are divided into three categories:
- Type 1: Macau residents studying for an associate degree or bachelor's degree at a Macau higher education institution, with no prior knowledge of Portuguese (excluding final-year students).
- Type 2: Macau residents studying for an associate degree or bachelor's degree at an institution outside Macau, with no prior knowledge of Portuguese (excluding final-year students).
- Type 3: Macau residents studying for an associate degree or bachelor's degree in Macau or elsewhere, with Portuguese proficiency at A1 level (200 hours of study at the Portuguese Institute of the Orient) or higher (excluding native speakers, graduates of Portuguese primary/secondary schools, students in higher education programs taught primarily in Portuguese, and final-year students).
Activity Content
Phase 1
1.1 Basic Portuguese Course for Type 1 & 2 Students
- Target: Type 1 & 2 students
- Quota: 100 students each type
- Course Dates & Times:
- Lunar New Year Class: February 5–18, 2014 (4 classes, 25 students each, total 100)
- Easter Class: April 1–30, 2014 (2 classes, 25 students each, total 50)
- Summer Vacation Class: June 14–28, 2014 (2 classes, 25 students each, total 50)
- Location: Portuguese Institute of the Orient
- Duration: 50 hours
- Fee: Free
- Application: Online via the official webpage. Required documents include Macau Resident ID, student card, academic transcripts, CV, and a statement of purpose.
- Selection: Based on CV analysis. Selected list published on the webpage.
- Notes: Students with ≥80% attendance and passing grades receive a certificate. Top performers are selected for an interview to qualify for Phase 2.
1.2 Portuguese Proficiency Requirements & Test for Type 3 Students
- Target: Type 3 students
- Application: Online by February 28, 2014. Must submit proof of A1 or higher Portuguese proficiency.
- Selection: 30 students selected for interview based on CV analysis. 16 top performers take the Portuguese Proficiency Test.
- Test: A1 level content, organized by the Portuguese Institute of the Orient, with exam papers provided by the Faculty of Arts, University of Lisbon.
- Notes: Students who pass the test qualify for Phase 2.
Phase 2 – Lisbon Summer Camp
- Target: 40 students from Phase 1 who passed the interview, and 16 Type 3 students who passed the proficiency test.
- Quota: 56 students total, divided into two groups for July and August.
- Course Dates: July 2–29, 2014 or August 1–29, 2014 (as per University of Lisbon schedule).
- Teaching Institution: Faculty of Arts, University of Lisbon

- Activity Fee: MOP 3,000 per student.
- Government Coverage: Includes a 3-month round-trip air ticket to Lisbon, connecting ferry tickets to Hong Kong airport, course fees, EUR 420 accommodation subsidy, travel insurance for the course period, and a Lisbon public transport monthly pass.
- Other Requirements: Students must arrange their own student visa and accommodation, submit a post-course report (min. 2000 Chinese characters or 2500 English/Portuguese words), and attend a debriefing meeting.
- Rules & Penalties: Minimum 75% attendance required. Violations may require reimbursement of government-covered expenses (EUR 420 + EUR 540 + MOP 8,000).
