King Lear

King Lear is one of Shakespeare's four great tragedies. It is hailed as an extremely important and representative work not only within Shakespeare's oeuvre but in the entire history of human drama.

Synopsis

• Plot: The aging King Lear decides to divide his kingdom and power among his three daughters. The condition is that each daughter must express her love for him. The one who professes the most love will receive the largest share.
• The Daughters' Responses: The two elder daughters, Goneril and Regan, use flattery and sweet words to win Lear's favor and are granted vast lands. When it is the turn of his youngest daughter, Cordelia, she states that while she loves her father, she will one day marry and must reserve a portion of her heart for her future husband.
• The Consequence: Although honest, Cordelia's answer enrages Lear. In a fit of anger, he disowns her and severs their relationship.
• The Tragedy: Lear plans to rely on his two professedly loving daughters to live out his days in peace. However, having relinquished his power, the king is about to face a悲惨晚年 far worse than death.
